Cotoneaster microphyllus Cotoneaster microphyllus
A shrub with long arching branches, and rounded leaves, dark green above and mid-green beneath. White flowers are followed by round, red fruit.

I collected the seed of this near Bim Tal, Uttar Pradesch, in the Himalayan foothills. It is a particularly ground hugging clone, unlike a lot of C.microphyllus offered for sale which a quite upright.

Cotoneaster tomentellus Cotoneaster tomentellus

A rare spreading shrub with arching branches. Leaves grey-green above, whitish beneath. Inconspicuous flowers are followed by bright coral-red berries.

This is the plant introduced by Wilson in 1908 under the name of Cot. racemiflora  var. soongorica. This plant's identity was confirmed for me by Janet Fryer who has the national collection of Cotoneasters. The only place I have seen it growing is at Hidcote Gardens near the entrance.

A bushy evergreen shrub with dark green, ovate leaves margined with white and often tinged pink, and inconspicuous pale green flowers in summer, occasionally followed by pale pink fruits.

I believe this is the true Silver Queen not radicans Variegata.

The picture shows a 20 year old plant never pruned, demonstrating the compact growth habit. Many other cultivars get very leggy and untidy.



Gomphostigma virgatum Gomphostigma virgatum

This excellent plant is quite hardy even though it comes from S.Africa. The soft grey foliage make it an admiral addition to the grey garden plants, it resembles a curry plant (Helichrysum italicum) with petty white flowers about 1cm across, but without the awful smell of the curry plant.
